The QBE Group

QBE has been the leading insurance company in the Australian market for more than 120 years and is one of the top 25 insurance groups worldwide.

In 1886, two insurance agents from Sydney in Australia founded the North Queensland Insurance Company – the "Q" in QBE. Under this name the company established further agencies in Asia, Oceania and London.

In 1921, The Bankers' and Traders' Insurance Company was formed – the "B" in QBE. Later, the Group acquired The Equitable Probate and General Insurance Co. Limited, which added the "E" to QBE.

After the merger in 1973, the first letter of each of these three companies finally also gave the new group its name, under which it has been listed on the Sydney stock exchange, where we have our headquarters, ever since.

In the 1980s, QBE started expanding into the most important insurance markets through a series of acquisitions, one of which was the acquisition of Winterthur US Holding Inc. at the end of 2006.

Since those early beginnings, QBE Group has established itself in 45 countries and now has more than 13,000 employees. We offer primary insurance and reinsurance solutions that cover even the most complex risks in property and casualty insurance. With our innovative and top quality products, QBE has earned an international reputation as a strong partner for its customers.
