Green Overview

It is very obvious, but the easiest way to cut fuel use and CO2 emissions from driving is simple, drive less. But when you run a business and driving and use of vehicles is part of that business, it is not that easy.

This section provides ideas and solutions for reducing the amount you drive and for making better use of other methods of transport, including car sharing.

The use of vehicle transport does contribute a large amount to the overall problem. Even with more eco driving and today's relatively efficient vehicles, they still use lots of fuel and create large quantities of CO2.

Whilst driving is sometimes the only practical option, some trips may well be unnecessary and with some thought, could be avoided. Around half of all car journeys in the UK are for less than five miles, which are often the least efficient for a car. A cold engine uses almost twice as much fuel as one that has warmed up and some catalytic converters can take five miles to become effective.

But it's not just an environmental issue. Driving is often more expensive than other forms of transport, especially as fuel costs remain high. So whether you want to save energy or save money, start thinking about ways to cut down on the amount of mileage your fleet vehicles travel.
